Alita Constructions built a 655 square metre purpose-built childcare centre on Albany Highway in Gosnells, completed in May 2023. The floor plan was set out around how a centre runs each day, with separate rooms for different age groups and the back-of-house space staff need to run them.
What goes into a purpose-built childcare centre
The 655 square metre building holds rooms for different age groups, a cot room, bathroom facilities, a kitchen, entry and reception, a staff breakout room, and planning and meeting rooms. Outside, the playground includes sand pits, softfall areas and nature playgrounds.
Why a childcare centre is not a standard commercial build
A childcare centre is a regulated building type before it is a commercial one. The Education and Care Services National Regulations set a minimum of 3.25 square metres of unencumbered indoor space and 7 square metres of unencumbered outdoor space for every child a service is approved to care for. Additionally, outdoor areas must be enclosed by a fence that children cannot get through, over or under. Those figures decide how many children a centre can be approved for, which is why the internal layout and the playground are worked out together rather than one after the other.
